Case Study of a sponsored child

Musukebba will be 16 years old in October 2006 and she was the second child to be sponsored back in 2001. The hundreth child has just been sponsored (Sept 06).

She lives with her parents and four brothers in the family compound in Wellingara, close to the nursery school and the market. Her elder sister lives with another family nearby. Musukebba's father is a labourer and her mother takes care of the domestic chores and has a stall at the market, sometimes selling ice. She also attends the adult literacy class.

The house is built of cement blocks, water is fetched from a nearby standpipe, and mother cooks outdoors on a wood fire. There is no electricity and they have a pit toilet outside.

Musukebba is in Grade 11 at Senior Secondary school, studying science and would like to train as a nurse. Gambia needs trained nurses to stay in the country and it would be wonderful if, one day, Musukebba worked in Wellingara Community Health Clinic, currently being built. She likes volleyball and watching tv (battery run).

The family is Muslim and of the Mandinka tribe. Musukebba can speak Mandinka and Pulaar (Fula tribe) and English of course, as all education is in the English language.

Musukebba and her sponsor exchange letters and as the sponsor visits Gambia regularly, she is able to visit the family in their compound. This is a good way to get to know a Gambian family and their culture.
